Facts, Answers, & Questions

Q: Who runs ClayCrits?
A: Chuck Purviance and Nicole Woodard run ClayCrits.

Q: What do you want the public to know about ClayCrits?
A: We run this platform because there is a need to highlight emerging level ceramic artists. Since our relaunch in March 2020, we are working on new initiatives to grow the platform. Your feedback is welcome! Please know, while ClayCrits continues to transform, it is something Chuck and Nicole do in their free time. We are not a large company with investors or sponsors.

Q: Who can be featured on ClayrCrits?
A: We are looking to feature ceramic artists that are emerging in the field.

Q: How do you define "emerging artist?"
A: This is a tricky question! Emerging artists come in different forms. We look for people who would benefit from more recognition and are making a consistent body of work. The individual may be academically trained or not, and should be able to speak well about their work, but aren't a career artist yet.

Q: If I want to be featured, what do I do?
A:
We survey the hashtag #claycrits when we are looking to reach out to people, but the quickest way to get featured is to reach out to us directly on Instagram.

Q: How often do you feature artists on Instagram?
A: We feature about four artists a week.

Q: How do you represent diverse voices and backgrounds?
A: On a weekly basis, we reach out to a handful of artists. We are actively looking for diversity in work (pottery, sculpture, etc) and ethnic backgrounds. Our goal is to present a survey of work being made (while we are based in the US, we post international artists as well). All of the people featured on ClayCrits have been contacted by us, reached out to us directly, or were nominated by a friend. The content on our page is driven by our mission of inclusivity and by our audience.

Q: After I send my statement and bio, how long does it take to be features?
A:  We usually have a queue of artists in our inbox, so it can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks to be featured. Rest assured, we will get to you! Feel free to message us if much time has passed.

Q: Does it cost to be featured on ClayCrits?
A: No. We do not accept payment for features.

Q: Is ClayCrits a non-profit?
A: No, and we aren't a business either. ClayCrits takes in $0 revenue, and Chuck and Nicole are unpaid.

Q: How does ClayCrits function while not receiving revenue?
A: All operating costs (ex: website) come from our own pocket and our time is unpaid. We want to facilitate a place for emerging artists to get footing in their career, even if we have to sacrifice a little.
